Insulated cases and boxes for the pharmaceutical industry
The transport of medicines, vaccines, and biotechnology products requires strict control of logistics conditions. To this end, Knauf Industries designs insulated cases and boxes for the pharmaceutical industry made of EPS and EPP, capable of maintaining temperature ranges from -80 °C to +25 °C.

Safe shipping with our insulated packaging
Temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical products require temperature-controlled transport to preserve their stability and efficacy. Vaccines, biotherapeutics, samples, and many other medical devices must therefore be kept within a precise temperature range, sometimes for extended periods and under varying climatic conditions.
To address these challenges, Knauf Industries offers insulated cases and boxes for the pharmaceutical industry. The honeycomb structure of our solutions provides high-performance insulation that minimizes heat exchange and protects products from shocks and vibrations during logistics handling.
Our solutions thus help safeguard products throughout the supply chain: transport between laboratories, distribution to hospitals, and even last-mile delivery.
Solutions for every need
To meet the diverse logistics needs of the pharmaceutical industry, Knauf Industries offers several lines of insulated boxes and containers tailored to your specific requirements for transport, volume, and duration.
Secure Long-Term Transport
For long-distance shipments or products requiring extremely low temperatures, Frobox® boxes ensure stable temperature control for several days.
Made of expanded polystyrene (EPS), they maintain temperatures between -80°C and -20°C for up to approximately 110 hours, depending on logistics conditions and cold pack configurations.
They are suitable for transporting vaccines, biotherapeutics, or substances sensitive to sub-zero temperatures.
Transport of large volumes
For high-volume shipments or complex logistics flows, the Ringbox® is the solution we recommend.
This EPS insulated container has a usable volume of up to 300 liters and can support loads of up to 360 kg, while maintaining temperatures between -80 °C and -20 °C for approximately 120 hours.
Its modular design allows for integration into all pharmaceutical logistics networks, particularly for the consolidated transport of temperature-sensitive products.
Protection for Fragile Products
Knauf Industries has designed the Freshbox® for the transport of heat-sensitive medications, medical samples, or vaccines that require a controlled refrigerated environment.
This EPS insulated box maintains a temperature between +2 °C and +8 °C for up to 120 hours, while protecting products from shocks and vibrations during transport.
Optimized and flexible deliveries
For short logistics chains or last-mile distribution, we offer a reusable solution: the Komebac® Cool cooler.
Made of expanded polypropylene (EPP), it keeps products between +2 °C and +8 °C for approximately 36 hours.
Reusable, washable, and durable, it is used in particular for reverse logistics flows between laboratories, healthcare centers, and pharmacies.

The temperature ranges covered by our solutions
The insulated cases and boxes for the pharmaceutical industry developed by Knauf Industries cover a wide range of temperature requirements in pharmaceutical logistics.
Our solutions are designed to maintain:
- -80 °C to -20 °C for biotech products or vaccines requiring sub-zero temperatures;
- +2 °C to +8 °C for temperature-sensitive medications and refrigerated vaccines;
- +20 °C to +25 °C for certain products sensitive to temperature fluctuations.
Thanks to appropriately thick walls, the use of cold or hot packs, and laboratory testing conducted in summer and winter cycles, we guarantee packaging with thermal stability tailored to the requirements of the pharmaceutical cold chain.
Customizable insulated crates and boxes
Are you facing specific challenges related to transportation, volume, or temperature control? If our standard solutions do not fully meet your requirements, Knauf Industries can also offer you a custom pharmaceutical packaging design service.
Our teams will then assist you in developing and manufacturing solutions tailored to your logistics needs and constraints, with the option to customize:
- The dimensions and volumes of the boxes;
- The thickness and density of the insulating walls;
- The interior padding and fittings;
- The colors and markings;
- The integration of temperature sensors or connected devices.
The materials we use
To ensure high performance in thermal insulation and mechanical strength, our insulated crates and boxes are made from high-performance foam materials.
EPS (expanded polystyrene)
EPS is composed of up to 98% air, which gives it excellent thermal insulation properties.
Its main advantages are:
- Very good thermal performance;
- Extremely lightweight;
- Effective shock absorption;
- Recyclability in dedicated recycling streams.
EPP (expanded polypropylene)
EPP contains approximately 95% air but offers higher mechanical strength.
Its main advantages are:
- Excellent impact resistance;
High durability; - The ability to be reused across multiple logistics cycles;
- Ease of cleaning.
In line with the circular economy, our packaging can also incorporate recycled materials or those derived from renewable resources, while remaining recyclable at the end of its life.

FAQ
-
Expanded polystyrene (EPS) offers excellent thermal insulation, optimum lightness and impact resistance. It effectively maintains the temperature of sensitive products during temperature-controlled transport.
-
Polystyrene insulated boxes are suitable for temperature-sensitive products such as fresh and frozen foods, vaccines, biological samples, solid CO2, medicines and certain chemicals.
-
Our EPS insulated boxes are recyclable and can be made with recycled polystyrene. We have a collection and recycling program for expanded polystyrene: Knauf Circular®.
-
The choice depends on several criteria: required temperature (-80 °C to +8 °C), transport duration, product type and logistical constraints. Solutions such as Frobox® for solid CO2, Ringbox® for large volumes and Freshbox® for fresh products meet specific needs.
