The pool renovation market after the 2003 heatwave

France is not only the land of fashion and wine, it’s also the queen of the swimming pool! Of all European countries, France has the most private swimming pools, ranking second worldwide behind the USA. That’s one pool for every 38 inhabitants in France, compared with 1 for every 37 in Spain and 1 for every 112 in Germany.

One of the main reasons for this meteoric growth was the heatwave of 2003. At the time, there were some 700,000 structures over 10 m² in size. Twenty years later, according to the Fédération des Professionnels de la Piscine et du Spa (FPP), the number of pools has exceeded 3.5 million. The result for professionals: a twofold increase in sales, but also increasingly complex maintenance and renovation requirements.

But a pool built in 2003 is not necessarily suited to today’s needs: damaged linings, aging equipment, excessive water and energy consumption, outdated safety standards… all reasons to renovate.

Why upgrade pools installed after 2003?

Like all buildings, in-ground pools age. Back in the day, most pools were built in concrete, which was heavy, poorly insulated and costly. Today, these old-generation pools are often considered too energy-hungry, unsafe and in need of major technical upgrades:

  • Worn liner
  • Obsolete filtration
  • End-of-life heating or heat pump
  • Outdated accessories

For your customers, renovation is an opportunity to modernize their pool, making it more attractive, more durable and more comfortable to live in. It also allows them to reduce energy and water consumption, simplify maintenance and increase the value of their home.

Towards smart, safe equipment

A swimming pool that’s starting to look old quickly becomes costly and risky. Whether it’s the liner, the filtration system, the water treatment or the heat pump, the average lifespan of technical equipment is no more than 15 to 20 years.

For your customers, it is therefore essential to choose materials that are durable. Especially since the market today offers eco-responsible accessories with a modern design that enhances the bathing area. For example, old-fashioned metal ladders have been replaced by aesthetically pleasing staircases that are safer and more comfortable to use.

Changing customer expectations

Homeowners’ expectations have changed considerably. Today, they want a pool that’s modern, easy to maintain, economical and aesthetically pleasing .

Renovation a way to :

  • sublimate their outdoor space
  • integrate comfort features (submerged deck, integrated stairs, LED lighting, automatic controls)
  • reduce energy consumption
  • improving safety for children and seniors

These projects add value to the home, while making daily life easier. As installers or distributors, you have a key role to play in supporting this transformation.
