MORE THAN JUST WORDS, ACTIONS!

CSR report 2021 picture page 1📢 Knauf Industries presents its first Corporate Social Responsibility report!

Since the end of 2018, Knauf Industries has embarked on the “Mission CSR” adventure with the implementation of a CSR approach guided by a team of ambassadors. Adherence to the United Nations Global Compact, followed by a consultation with our internal and external stakeholders, led us to identify five strategic CSR challenges:

1️⃣ Integrating CSR into our activities and businesses
2️⃣ Guaranteeing health, safety and well-being at work
3️⃣ Recovering materials at the end of their life
4️⃣ Protecting the health and safety of consumers
5️⃣ Reducing our consumption and emissions

Our teams will be delighted to share with you this first CSR report, which is authentic and inspired by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ISO 26000 and the principles of the Global Compact.
It presents Knauf Industries, our role in the polymer life cycle and our CSR strategy.

In the meantime, we invite you to visit our social networks throughout the month of June. You will discover these issues in more detail and some of our actions to make them a reality.

Thanks to Raphaëlle VOGEL from Stepping Stones whose #CSR expertise contributes to the relevance of our initiatives.

Knauf Industries expands its range of materials

As part of its CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) approach, Knauf Industries is committed to offering alternative packaging solutions that contribute to the circular economy. In March 2020, Knauf Industries launched the first more circular material, NEOPS®, a alveolar foam certified according to REDcert² by TÜV, alternative of curent petrosourced origin foam.

Once again, in 2022, Knauf Industries innovated and expanded its family of solutions by launching not 1 but 2 materials derived from the recycling of post-consumer plastic waste and recyclable in existing sorting channels:

R’KAP®, a single-material made from recycled plastics by Knauf Industries, for the manufacture of thermoformed or injected products

R’KAP®, a single-material suitable for packaging food and processed products, made from post-consumer recycled materials. with the same performance and characteristics as polypropylene and 100% recyclable in existing PP channels. Formulated on a PP base, it completes the range of KAP’ materials by offering perfect sealing quality in a protective atmosphere or under skin. It can be microwaved and pasteurised, and is also available in Kapseal®, Kapclear® and in Kaplight®. In addition to its excellent sealing qualities, R’kap® is 100% recyclable through existing PP channels.

This REDcert²-certified material innovation contributes to the circular economy by reducing the need to use fossil feedstocks. The fossil feestocks needed for manufacturing are replaced by a substance derived from post-consumer plastic waste.

REDcert² certification is a Europe-wide sustainability certification system covering all sustainable raw materials (biomass, renewable energies, etc.).

CELOOPS®, a foam made from raw materials derived from the recycling of post-consumer plastic waste by Knauf Industries

Knauf Industries launch CELOOPS®, a cellular foam made derived from the recycling of post-consumer plastic waste that offers the same technical characteristics as EPS expanded polystyrene.

This material for the circular economy is certified by TÜV according to REDcert². REDcert² certification guarantees that the producers of alternative raw materials have indeed substituted the virgin fossil resource with the resource derived from the recycling of post-consumer plastic waste, and Knauf Industries is also part of this REDcert² certification process for the manufacture and marketing of its CELOOPS® products.

To date, some Knauf Industries 16 sites are REDcert² certified in France and 4 in Spain.

CELOOPS® is a material of choice for packaging solutions because it is suitable for food contact. As well as being made from raw materials derived from the recycling of post-consumer plastic waste, CELOOPS® is recyclable at collection points and in the Knauf Circular® loop channel, which ensures the collection of EPS waste and guarantees its reuse in new products.

Knauf Industries is thus clarifying its choices in terms of eco-design and end-of-life management of its products. With its ID Lab research and innovation centre, Knauf Industries wants to develop more responsible materials to offer its partners packaging solutions and technical parts that contribute to the circular economy.

New for our new NEOPS® material

Remember at the beginning of March 2020, Knauf Industries launched NEOPS®, its new alternative foam material to expanded polystyrene (EPS), which is of non petro-sourced origin and favours the circular economy of plastics.

A low carbon material innovation from Knauf Industries, born from a collaboration between our Innovation & Development Center ID Lab and raw material manufacturers.

NEOPS® is officially certified according to REDcert², standard on the use of sustainable biomass in the chemical industry.

The sites concerned are :

This material innovation contributes to the circular economy of plastics as it reduces the use of fossil raw materials and CO2 emissions by at least 30%.

A product made of NEOPS® is 100% recyclable in the EPS (sorting bins, waste sorting centers, collection points) and KNAUF Circular® sectors.
The technical performance of NEOPS® is identical to expanded polystyrene but with a better environmental impact.

Different material grades are available depending on the performance required: thermal, flame retardant, insulation, fire resistance, shock absorption and food contact.

NEOPS®, alternative material solution to fossil-based EPS

Knauf Industries launched NEOPS®, its new foam material, certified from from renewable resources.

Picture of plastic trays in neops by Knauf Industries

A material innovation from Knauf Industries

The NEOPS® foam material is an alternative to fossil-based expanded polystyrene (EPS). It was born out of a collaboration between the ID lab research and development center of Knauf Industries and the producers of raw materials.

NEOPS® is a material manufactured according to the concept of Biomass Balance*.
NEOPS® is REDcert² certified, a new standard on the use of sustainable biomass in the chemical industry.

This innovation provides a solution to the circular economy because it preserves feedstock resources and reduces carbon impact compared to EPS.

A NEOPS® product is 100% recyclable in the PSE sectors (sorting bins, collection points, KNAUF Circular).

The technical performance of NEOPS® is identical to expanded polystyrene but with a better environmental impact.

Different material grades are available with improved performance for thermal, fire resistance, shock absorption and food contact.

*Biomass from industrial waste unsuitable for food use or organic waste (organic waste from the forestry industry, not involved in deforestation, no competition with agricultural land for food production). Directive (EU) 2015/1513), Annex IX, Part A.

LAUNCH OF KNAUF CIRCULAR®!

While the National Assembly passed the law on the circular economy on January 21, 2020, the Knauf Group gives new life to falls, packaging and wedging in EPS thanks to its new dedicated service Knauf Circular®.

EPS collection and recycling initiative provided by the Knauf Group for its Knauf, Knauf Industries, Isobox Isolation and Isobox Agromer brands over the whole of France.

Knauf Industries to all professionals, manufacturers in all sectors (food, everyday or sustainable consumer goods), distributors (hyper and super-markets) or recycling centers offer The Knauf Circular® service. This service makes it possible to recover, on site, their own EPS waste to introduce it into a responsible, reliable collection and recycling sector, guaranteeing the traceability of materials. This solution enhances these resources by giving them a second life, for a true model of virtuous circular economy.

By subscribing to the Knauf Circular® service, the players in the sectors using EPS conserve resources and fight against waste, by ensuring the sustainable management of EPS waste. Even better, they also fight landfill and uncontrolled dumping. Using the Knauf Circular® service also means, for businesses, ensuring compliance with regulations on the circular economy.

To support professionals, a website is dedicated to Knauf Circular®: knaufcircular.fr

The Knauf Circular® paid service consists of the provision of 1m3 bags of capacity (or, if necessary, a more substantial return means).

Once the bags are filled, they are picked up within 10 days on sites (companies, grouping points, recycling centers, etc.) for a minimum of 20 bags of clean EPS (or rinsed in the case of used seafood packaging).

Waste traceability is ensured by the delivery of a waste collection slip.
This waste is recycled into new products by the nearest authorized recycling plant.
