The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ecodesign Directive<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in particular aims at the <\/span><b>heart of productive processes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as it requires companies to <\/span><b>rethink their design procedures.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is also coupled with other sustainability norms, such as the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ErP directive<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does the <\/span><b>Ecodesign Directive<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mean for the <\/span><b>HVAC sector <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and how can companies ensure they comply with it and still <\/span><b>remain efficient<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and stay ahead in the sector? Let\u2019s take a look.<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the EU <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ecodesign Directive<\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Ecodesign Directive <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was first launched in 2009 with the aim of \u201cestablishing a framework for the setting of ecodesign requirements for energy-related products\u201d in order to generate energy savings and minimize environmental damage. The latest update on the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ecodesign Directive<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was in March 2022.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ecodesign Directive<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> understands the importance of achieving <\/span><b>efficiency in energy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> equipment and sets the goal of approaching and tackling this goal<\/span><b> during the design stage<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In fact, according to official figures, decisions taken at the design stage can determine up to 80% of a product&#8217;s life cycle environmental impact.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As such, companies are expected to shift their design processes in order to guarantee their products are more sustainable in the following areas:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are more <\/span><b>durable<\/b><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their <\/span><b>maintenance <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is easier and they\u2019re reparable<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019re <\/span><b>recyclable<\/b><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They guarantee <\/span><b>energy and resource efficiency\u00a0<\/b><\/li><\/ul><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which products are regulated by the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ecodesign Directive<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ecodesign Directive regulates \u201cenergy-related products\u201d. These are then defined in the text as \u201cany good that has an <\/span><b>impact on energy consumption<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during use which is placed on the market and\/or put into service, and includes parts intended to be incorporated into energy-related products covered by this Directive (&#8230;)\u201d.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the list of particular products could potentially be endless, this broad category includes the design of the following:\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Home appliances and electronics <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(from lamps to refrigerators\u2026)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Construction and energy-regulation materials <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in buildings (where it\u2019s possible to include the HVAC sector, but also insulation systems or windows, among many others)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Equipment such as <\/span><b>electrical motors or welding systems<\/b><\/li><\/ul><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Energy Labeling regulation<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ErP Directive<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also part of European countries\u2019 wider efforts to reduce the environmental impact in the energy sector. For the HVAC sector, in particular, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ErP Directive<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is among the norms that directly affect production processes in order to remain competitive.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The current text in Energy Labeling regulation establishes a framework for companies to <\/span><b>provide standard product information<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about their products\u2019 energy consumption. This is done with the aim of allowing consumers to make more informed decisions.<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SEER &#8211; Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The SEER has become the key performance indicator to measure <\/span><b>energy efficiency in HVAC equipment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the wider spectrum of the Ecodesign Directive and other European norms targeting sustainability.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The SEER calculates the ratio between an equipment\u2019s<\/span><b> annual cooling demand energy values <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the<\/span><b> annual electrical input energy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that is required during the cooling season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As opposed to other energy efficiency measurements, it takes into account:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Weather data<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from a reference city (Strasbourg)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Efficiency while the unit is <\/span><b>in operation<\/b><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consumption values for instance when the <\/span><b>compressor <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is not running<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tips to comply with the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ecodesign Directive<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the HVAC sector<\/span><\/h2><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minimize Air leaking\u00a0<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preventing air leaks is a key factor in guaranteeing HVAC efficiency and, as such, in complying with requirements established by the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ecodesign Directive<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the design stage, the ability to minimize air leaks can take many shapes. For instance, it may be linked to incorporating <\/span><b>custom-made technical parts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in order to guarantee they fit within existing spaces and maximum airtightness is achieved.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, this also means <\/span><b>picking the right materials. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Options such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plastic technical parts<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> guarantee maximum<\/span><b> thermal insulation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and minimize temperature leaks.
